# How the extension and a server agree

The extension and the server are released separately, and you update each when
you choose. At any moment one of them can be newer than the other. So before
anything else, the extension asks the server what it can do.

## What a server tells the extension

The question needs no key. The answer carries the server's name, its version,
and the versions of each feature it speaks.

## What the extension does with it

A control for something your server does not speak is disabled and says which
side needs updating — the extension or the server — rather than failing when
you press it. When a control says so, one of the two is older than the
other.

## Next steps

- [Update](/docs/install/#updating): run the install command again, then
reload the extension. [Update Commentware](/update-extension/) shows the
  command.
