# Move a pin and edit its screenshot

Put a comment that has come unstuck back on the thing it was about, and mark up
what its screenshot shows. Learn more about [how a pin finds its
element](/docs/concepts/threads-and-pins/).

## Prerequisites

- The extension installed and connected to a server. See [Install a server](/docs/install-server/).
- The comment overlay open on the page. See [Comment on a
  page](/docs/using/comments/).

## Move a pin

1. Drag the pin. Past a few pixels of travel it follows your pointer; under that
it is a click and opens the thread.
2. Drop it on the thing the comment was always about.

**Dropping it re-reads the element underneath from scratch** — it is not moved by
however far your pointer traveled, it is re-attached to whatever is now under
it, and the page is photographed again.
`Ctrl+Z` takes the move back, and takes the new screenshot off the
thread with it.

## Retake a screenshot

The page is photographed when you place a pin, with the comment overlay itself
rendered out of the way but the rest of the page exactly as you see it —
including any pins already on it.

1. On the thread card, select **Retake**. It photographs the page as it is now.

**Retake** is offered even on a comment that has no screenshot at all, which is
the case it is most useful for.

## Draw on or clip a screenshot

1. Open the screenshot on the thread card.
2. Choose **Pen** to draw, or **Clip** and drag a box around the part that
   matters.
3. Select the save button, which names what it saves: **Save drawing**, **Save
clip** or **Save drawing and clip**.

What you draw is saved beside the original rather than over it, and a clip is
what the thread shows. Closing the viewer without saving discards the edit.

## Copy a screenshot

1. Open the screenshot on the thread card.
2. Select **Copy the picture**.

## When there is no screenshot

Posting never waits for a screenshot and never fails because of one. If there
is none, the composer says which of four things happened:

- **Screenshots are switched off** — for this site, or for the whole server. See
  [Settings](/docs/server/settings/).
- **Chrome will not photograph this tab.** Some pages cannot be captured at all.
- **The file was too large**, or **the server declined that format**. The server
  bounds what it will store.

The comment posts either way, and you can retake the screenshot later.

## Check that it worked

A moved pin opens the same thread from its new place, with a new screenshot on
it. A saved clip is what the thread card shows.
