Finish installing
The installer opened this window in the Chrome profile whose directory is .Chrome made it just now and names a new profile itself, so it may show as “Person 1” until you rename it from the profile menu.Commentware runs only in the profile it is loaded into, so this window is the one to load it in. A profile kept for the sites you comment on also limits what a server could ever be asked about — see a Chrome profile only for this.
Load Commentware in the Chrome profile you want it in: it runs only in the profile it is loaded into, which is whichever window you do the steps below in. The installer can open a profile kept just for Commentware — run it again with --profile Commentware. See a Chrome profile only for this.
There is an older install still loaded
An earlier version of Commentware put the extension somewhere this installer no longer writes to, and Chrome reloads an unpacked extension from the path it was given — so it is still running the old one.
If still lists Commentware from that path, remove that entry and load the new directory the way the Install tab says; a reload would read the old one again. Nothing has deleted it — that was deliberate, because Chrome is loading it and a command that said it was installing an extension should not break one.
This is where the installer sends you when it has finished writing files, and it arrives carrying the directory to load. Nothing sent you here, so there is no directory to show — the installation guide has the command that starts it.
Load it into Chrome
- 1. In this window, open — press it to copy it, then paste it into the address bar, because no page is allowed to link there.
- 2. Turn on developer mode, the switch at the top right of the page.
- 3. Choose Load unpacked and paste the extension's directory into the file picker.
Chrome shows a standing warning about extensions running in developer mode. That warning is about the mode, not about this extension, and there is no way to install an off-store extension without it. A browser whose policy disables developer mode cannot run Commentware at all.
Commentware does not work in any tab you open or refresh: the old version looks for files the update replaced.
Reload it in Chrome
- 1. In the profile where Commentware is loaded, open — press it to copy it, then paste it into the address bar, because no page is allowed to link there.
- 2. Press reload on Commentware's card. A comment you have started and not sent is lost when it reloads, so send or copy it first.
- 3. Refresh the tabs you want Commentware on. A tab that was open before the reload keeps the old version until it loads again.
There is no Load unpacked this time: the directory has not changed, so loading it again is not what does it. Keep developer mode on: reloading with it off turns the extension off.
To check that it worked, open /ext. If Commentware is running in your browser the extension replaces that page and says so.
Connect to the server
This page arrived with a key for the server below. Once Commentware is loaded, the button hands it over: Commentware asks you first, in a window of its own, and names the server again there.
The rest of your setup — the server, and an agent if you want one — is on the setup page, with only the steps that are yours.
The installation guide has every step: downloading the binary by hand, which platforms have a build, and running a server once the extension is in. What the installer checks before it unpacks anything is on how the install works.
